The JWST produced two tentative hints of DMS, but the reanalyses concluded that the data were not strong enough to support the detection. The disagreement is not about whether the planet has life, but rather about whether the molecule is even present.

The uncertainties surrounding the DMS detection are twofold. The first question is whether DMS is in the spectrum at all, and the second question would only matter if the first were settled. The way out is more and better data, and agreement on how to judge them. Additional JWST observations, analyses run by independent teams using different methods, and a shared standard for what counts as a detection are needed to settle the debate.
