The Bundibugyo virus, a rare and less-studied variant, has emerged as the culprit behind the latest outbreak, raising concerns about its impact on the region and beyond. This development is particularly alarming due to the lack of specific therapeutics and vaccines targeting this particular strain, unlike the more well-known Ebola Zaire.
What makes this outbreak different is the emergence of the Bundibugyo virus, which has only appeared once before in the DRC, in 2012. The Zaire strain, on the other hand, has been responsible for the majority of previous Ebola outbreaks in the country. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, director of the DRC's National Institute of Biomedical Research, highlights the stark contrast in fatality rates between the two strains, with Bundibugyo being less deadly but still posing a significant threat due to late detection and the challenges of containing it in a conflict-affected region.
The late detection of the outbreak is a critical factor. The WHO's swift response, deploying a mission to Ituri after receiving an alert on May 5, was crucial in confirming the outbreak after weeks of unexplained deaths.
The risk of further spread is high, particularly in the eastern DRC, where population movement and insecurity complicate response efforts. Health workers have been targeted in the past, and the challenges of operating in a conflict zone cannot be understated. With no specific vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, the response relies on basic measures such as isolating patients, contact tracing, and community engagement. The success of these interventions is evident in the containment of a previous outbreak of the same strain in northeastern DRC's Isiro in 2012.
The DRC government is taking proactive steps to address the crisis. Health Minister Roger Kamba announced the construction of three new treatment sites to increase the capacity of health facilities, recognizing the scale of the epidemic. Neighboring countries, including Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, have also stepped up surveillance, border screening, and emergency preparedness measures, acknowledging the potential for regional spread. The WHO's declaration of an international public health emergency underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a coordinated global response.
